We have all heard the old rhyme of April flowers bring May flowers. This has been a very mild and wet spring and should result in a very annoying allergy season.
Fortunately you have a number of choices to treat seasonal allergy with the release in the past few years a number of good medications to treat allergies without a prescription.
Not to long ago you needed to visit your doctor to treat that runny nose and itchy eyes! Many of the newer antihistamines are classified as non-drowsy, and you are usually able to receive relief with only one tablet daily. Products like Claritin (loratadine), Zyrtec (Cetrizine), and Allegra (fexofenadine) are all available in generic equivalents. According to the manufacturer's advertising each product is better than the other, but in reality, the one that works best for you is the correct product.
Last year the first non-prescription nasal steroid was released, Nasacort Allergy 24 Hr., and this spring Flonase was approved for over the counter sale. Both have similar effects and are effective used once daily. They can be used alone if you have mild symptoms or added to an oral antihistamine. Nasacort is preferred by some people because it is scent free and does not contain alcohol which can dry the nasal membrane, so it can moisturize the membrane. Some may have nose bleeds from Flonase due to the drying effect of the alcohol. The makers of Flonase promote their product to not only treat your nasal symptoms, itchy, runny nose, but also to relieve eye symptoms.
If you are experiencing itchy, watery eyes, there is relief from using allergy eye drops. There are some prescription only drops which are expensive. Alaway and Zaditor (ketotifen fumarate) are very effective for treating ophthalmic symptoms, and are available in generic products at a more reasonable cost. The drops also can be used alone, or in addition to an oral antihistamine or nasal steroid spray.
Don't suffer this allergy season, stop by and we can help you!
